Clear Lake firefighter Brandon Weis was recently named the Clear Lake Fire Dept.’s Firefighter of the Year, a distinction that was awarded to him by his peers on the department.
Each year Clear Lake firefighters are encouraged to nominate one of their own for the award by writing a letter explaining why they believe that person best exemplifies the positive characteristics of a member of the fire service. The chief officers then review the letters and make the final decision.
Weis has been a member of the Clear Lake Fire Dept. for 12 years and is the first member of his family to become a firefighter. He decided to become a volunteer firefighter because his dad had grown up in the area and he felt it was a good way to help out and be a part of that community.
Out on calls with the fire department Weis likes to run the pumper truck. He said most of his time with them has been spent on run-of-the-mill type of emergencies where they’re there to help and encourage people when they’re hurt.
“Brandon is very dedicated,” said Clear Lake Fire Chief Ron Koren. “He’s a big asset to the department and gets along with everyone. He also adds a little spice to the department with his personality.”
“I was surprised and thankful to have been named firefighter of the year,” said Weis. “It’s nice to follow in the footsteps of others who have been awarded this honor.”
He said although being a firefighter is usually stressful and emotional, it’s also very rewarding and a way to challenge oneself under pressure.
“It helps develop skills in life,” he added. “And helps in my career.”
Weis has formed good relationships with members of the fire department over the years, and said when he moved to the Clear Lake area people already knew him because of his dad growing up in the community, which made coming there feel really comfortable.
“People look at you differently when you volunteer in the community and you’re a member of the fire department,” he said. “People really appreciate things like that.”
