The Becker boys basketball team beat Cathedral last Friday to improve to 2-4 on the season heading into the Granite City Classic Tournament in St. Cloud this weekend.
Becker 101, Cathedral 97
The Bulldog boys jumped out to an early lead last Friday against St. Cloud, but near the end of the first half, the Crusaders clawed back into it and were only down by two points going into halftime.
The second half was much more interesting, as both teams kept the game close with timely shooting and excellent defense.
In the final minute of the game with Becker ahead, the Crusaders were able to tie the game up and with eight seconds left, they had a chance to secure a game winner. But, Becker held on and the game went into overtime tied at 95-95.
Becker came out firing in overtime, with a 6-0 run, and broke the 100 point mark.
The Crusaders were not able to recover.
Becker's Brandon Gustafson was selected as the All Star Trophy and Awards player of the game with 32 points.
Cathedral’s Jackson Jangula scored a career-high 29 points.
Granite City Classic
Becker was scheduled to play Minneapolis Roosevelt at 11:45 a.m. Friday, then STMA Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
The Granite City Classic is one of the most popular holiday tournaments in the St. Cloud area with games being played Friday and Saturday at St. Cloud Apollo High School and St. Cloud State University.
Thirty-four teams from around the state are scheduled to participate.
