The Becker boys basketball team played in the Granite City Classic in the St. Cloud Area last weekend and lost to Roosevelt and STMA.
They came back home Thursday to knock off Hutchinson by eight.
Granite City Classic
In game one, Becker faced off against Minneapolis Roosevelt at Hallenback Hall on the campus of SCSU Friday and lost by one point, 63-62.
Roosevelt’s Luke Barnes had the hot hand as he shot 6-of-8 from the field and was 4-of-5 from the free throw line. His 19 points led the Teddies as he also notched four rebounds, had two assists, one steal and two blocked shots.
Becker was led by Brandon Gustafson, who tallied 17 points and had eight rebounds, one assist, one block and was 8-of-11 shooting. The Bulldogs as a team finished 23-of-49 shooting (49%) compared to Roosevelt’s 22-of-50 (44%).
The Bulldogs finished with three fastbreak points, 15 second chance points and eight points off turnovers. The Teddies had six fastbreak points, 13 second chance points and 18 points off of turnovers.
Becker scoring: Gustafson 17, Gabe Lindbom 12, Sam Ricker 7, Nick Mittelsteadt 6, Cade Callahan 6, Carter Hietala 6, Sam Koubsky 2 and Basil Ricker 2.
Roosevelt scoring: Barnes 19, Soressa Chaffe 13, Abdikani Abdi 9, Kalid Ahmed 6, Montgomery Booth 4, Deszi Sims 4, TaiJhaun Williams 2 and Feysal Yusuf 2.
In game two, Becker was matched against St. Michael/Albertville and lost by seven, 65-58.
Nick Mittelsteadt exploded and had one of his best career games as he scored 21 points to lead all scorers last Saturday.
Becker used just six players in the game and each one scored at least one basket in the loss.
STMA was led by Kale Hoselton, who tallied 16 points. Three other Knights found double figures in Evan Wieker (13), Judson Chea (11) and Austin Jentzen (10).
Rounding out the scoring for STMA were: Peyton McLean (6), Brandon Sukalski (4), Sean Buchanan (3) and Jonah Breuer (2).
Other scorers for Becker were: Gustafson (11), Sam Ricker (10), Callahan (8), Linbom (6) and Koubsky (2).
The Granite City Classic is one of the most popular holiday tournaments in the St. Cloud area with games played at St. Cloud Apollo High School and St. Cloud State University. Thirty-four teams from around the state participated.
Bulldogs 68, Tigers 60
Thursday, Becker hosted Hutchinson and came away with their third win of the season.
This time it was Sam Ricker who exploded in scoring as he drained 27 points in the win over Hutch. Mittelsteadt registered his second straight, 20+-point game as he and Ricker combined to score 47 of Becker’s 68 points.
Hutchinson had a 20-point scorer as well, as Seth Grob matched Mittelsteadt’s 20 with a 20 of his own.
The game was tight throughout and by halftime, the home team was nursing a scant, two-point lead at 37-35. However, Josh Ihrke’s team emerged from the locker room and played solid defense the rest of the way, limiting the Tigers to just 25 points in the final frame.
Becker scoring: S. Ricker 27, Mittelsteadt 20, Gustafson 10, Lindbom 9 and Callahan 2.
Hutchinson scoring: Grob 20, Sam Rensch 11, Billy Marquardt 7, Devin Nelson-Rhoda 6, Russell Corrigan 6, Zachary Kuseske 5 and Logan Hoff 5.
