Bowe Highlights Vietnam Experiences With Historians

Jan. 23, the Sherburne History Center opened its 2019 Winter Lecture Series with a presentation by author Joshua Bowe. Bowe and his father Wilbur recently published The Ground You Stand Upon: Life of a Skytrooper in Vietnam. The book is based on 18 months of in-depth research and writing.

Wilbur Bowe was drafted into the United States Army, and served in the 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry. He was deployed to Vietnam in 1966 and 67. His son, now a member of the Minnesota National Guard, grew up seeing pictures and hearing bits and pieces about his father’s time in Vietnam, and really wanted to learn more. The two went on a journey finding fellow soldiers willing to share personal memories, reading published works, and even making a trip to the National Archives in College Park Maryland.

The History Center’s audience got to hear all about that research journey and see a number of images and documents that were uncovered by their research. Bowe had copies of his book available at the lecture. The book is also available on Amazon and at www.thegroundyoustandupon.org.

The Winter Lecture Series continues Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. with a presentation by SHC Executive Director Mike Brubaker. Brubaker will be presenting his popular research on The Art and Architecture of Cemeteries. Additional lectures will be presented Feb. 27 and March 27. All of the Winter Lecture Series events are at 2 p.m. There is no cost to attend.
