The Becker Middle School art program continues to inspire students to express their creativity, and the results are amazing.
Recently, one of the BMS students, Makenna Hanson designed a logo that is being used by the Together Reaching Area Kids (TRAK) committee, as the group tries to coalesce the entire community under their new motto: Creating a Community of Kindness.
In addition, the eighth grade media arts students worked together to design and paint a vibrant mural in the hallway leading to the field house.
According to the project description, “this collaborative project gives students the opportunity to apply their creativity and visual storytelling skills to a real-world space within the school.”
The students used the themes of community, school pride and student identity to create the mural, which reflects the spirit and energy of the middle school.
The mural begins with a megaphone symbolizing school pride, and then transitions into the three R’s—Respect, Responsibility, and Relationship — reflecting the core values of the school matrix. Every sport and activity offered at the middle school is represented, as is this year’s school-wide quote,”Human Kind, Be Both.”
Ultimately, the project will be completed over the next 10 years, creating a powerful visual legacy within the school.
Additionally, during the sixth grade Origami DIG class, students collaborated on a stunning hanging dragonfly mural now displayed in the Media Center.
According to teacher Auggie Lewandowski, “each dragonfly was carefully folded by hand and represents a unique individual in our school community—every student and staff member—totaling 721 dragonflies in all,” Ms. Lewandowski said.
“This project not only showcased students’ growing origami skills but also symbolized unity and creativity, transforming a simple art form into a powerful visual celebration of our entire middle school.”
The contributions of the art program have been inspiring to the entire school and have made important contributions to its culture for both staff and students.
“Our art program has really flourished in the past several years,” Principal Channel Boyer states. “We are very proud of our art teachers and students for helping to bring this project to life.”
