During their regular second meeting on May 28, the Big Lake City Council awarded Samantha Vansteenwyk with the Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award. She has been active in the community since 2007-2008 as a Big Lake ambassador, earning the award after the fifth year since its inception.
Open Forum
George Quinn, a worried local, advocated to lower the speed limit on Hwy. 10 after a recent fatal car accident. An upcoming project for the highway is already set out in 2029, but Quinn is requesting more immediate action from the city. The council deliberated on his request, later deciding to try and find out more information on possible solutions.
Audit Report
Caroline Stutsman and Deb Wegleben, financial director, discussed the previous year’s finances. Although the report stated that they were within a reasonable balance, council member Ken Halverson requested another meeting to dive further into the specifics of the report.
Other News
In other business:
• Two Big Lake student liaisons, Adelyn Gosewich and Allie Cross, reported a resounding success for the movie in the park event on May 23. They are still looking to fill in a position on their student council as of the 28th:
• City council member Kim Noding inquired about Minnesota’s Adopt-a-Drain program, but street maintenance manager Norm Michels says that it falls outside his field;
• Dan Childs, Water and Wastewater superintendent, announced that he has hosted a Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association (MMUA) training event;
• The council approved the resubmission of the previous funding proposal.
