Big Lake competes in inaugural Girls’ Flag Football season

Last Sunday, Big Lake High School was one of 51 schools to compete in the state’s first ever girls’ flag football season.

The league is not sanctioned by the Minnesota State High School League but instead sponsored by the Minnesota Vikings. The Hornets traveled to St. Michael-Albertville High School for their first weekend of games and came home with a 1-1 record.

Vs. STMA

The first game saw the team lose 20-14 in dramatic fashion to STMA. The Hornets fell behind early when the Knights scored an early touchdown to go ahead 6-0. But Big Lake responded quickly when senior quarterback Amara Obia found Shiloh Elliot in the endzone for a touchdown. The two teams traded scores and went into halftime tied 14-14. Neither team was able to pull away in the second half, and the score remained unchanged until late in the game. The Knights completed a pass as time expired and ran it in for a TD on the game’s final play to win 20-14.

Vs. Elk River

In the second game the Hornets defeated Elk River 24-12 for the team’s first ever win.

Again, the two teams played an even first half and went into the break tied at 12 all. However, this time it was Big Lake scoring a late touchdown to take the lead. Senior Shelby Petrich supplied the tiebreaking score, and Shiloh Elliot scored with just 30 seconds left to put the game away. Hailey Scheerz led the team in flag pulls against the Elks and had a sack and an interception. Allie Lu and Addison Holmen each also had INTs in the game.

Up Next

This Sunday, the team will head to Anoka High School for games against Anoka at 4 p.m. and STMA at 5 p.m.
