The combined Becker High School bands provided a program titled “A Spring Concert” Monday night under the direction of John Herdan, who is standing in for orchestral music director Jessica Gilbertson, who, though on maternity leave, did appear on the stage Monday night to laud the graduating seniors.
The program began with three selections performed by the ninth grade band, which included “High Plains”, “As Summer Was Just beginning (A song for James Dean)”, and “At the Speed of Light”. They were followed by the tenth grade band performing the “Third Suite” composition of march, waltz and rondo by Robert Jager, “Dillon’s Flight”, based on the code of conduct established at the Emerson J. Dillon School in Phoenix, New York and “Mandjiani”, folk music from Africa.
The wind ensemble then performed “A Festival Prelude” by Alfred Reed, an “Irish Tune from County Derry and Shepherd’s Hey” by Percy Aldridge Grainger and “Festivo” by Vaclav Nelhybel. The Combined Band then took the stage to close out the evening with “Chorale and Shaker Dance II” by John Zdechlik.
In his program notes, Herdan thanked the students for their hard work, their parents, especially those who had been former students of his, the staff and administration of the district, whom he called “extremely supportive” and Jessica Gilbertson, who “has put this magnificent program together.”
The printed program also included photos and brief biographies of the 30 graduating seniors, who are listed as follows: Angelica Anderson, clarinet; Colton Anderson, trumpet; Kalley Athmann, clarinet; Mikki Berscheit, clarinet; Heidi Corrigan, clarinet; Crystal Cortner, flute; Aaron DeVall, trumpet; Kayla Dierkhising, flute; Aly Fisher, saxophone; Mikayla Fitzpatrick, clarinet; Tyler Graaf, percussion; Kristin Haag, flute; Hunter Hammer, percussion; Abby Johnson, alto saxophone; Kalie Johnson, flute; Madi Kealy, flute; Alexandra Kimmerle, flute; Austin Knick, trumpet; Emily Knudsen, tenor saxophone; Ben Miller, bass clarinet; Matt Nelson, clarinet; Alyssa Olson, trumpet; Emily Olson, clarinet; Brandon Pearce, horn; Ashlee Reichel, clarinet; Kaleb Scepurek, trumpet, Tanner Stewart, trombone, Haley Thelen, trumpet; Sabrina Tiemens, clarinet, and Erik Tungland, tenor saxophone.
