THE BECKER SPEECH team had a great performance during sections. Seated are the four members advancing to state competition this Friday including Grace Klapak, Emma Kolbinger, Michelle Johnson and Micah Roetman.

Becker Speech Team Going To State, Again!

Becker’s Speech team arrived at Duluth East to compete in their sections tournament April 7. Little did they know they would soon be going to State.

The speech team travelled up to Duluth the day before the meet and stayed the night in the hotel. This night was used for all the team to celebrate their year, have fun and practice their pieces.

The next day, the team packed up and headed to Duluth East to compete in their speech rounds. Sophomore Emma Kolbinger and Junior Michelle Johnson talked about their first round of competition.

They described that everything felt great and that they could tell they did great. Their piece flew well and they felt that they did well in terms of rankings.

Unfortunately, they also exclaimed that they were uncertain about their rankings during their second and third round. However, felt that their performance reached perfection during their final round.

Michelle was excited as she talked about how she was in a state of shock when Emma and her names weren’t called out after second place. However, they couldn’t be happier bringing home the first place spot and a spot for state in the duo interpretation event.

Sophomore Micah Roetman also broke into the final round of his category of extemporaneous speaking. He competed against eight other students and finished in third place! Thus, bringing Becker three people that were going to state.

Roetman’s piece is improved, is research based and only receives a thirty minute prep time. However, Roetman has conquered this ability and, through his vast knowledge of politics, has soared as the season continued.

Junior Grace Klapak showed off her numerous chops in her final round of humorous interpretation, in which she placed third with her piece talking about “stupid” fairytales.

Klapak kept the crowd laughing and begging for more. Her piece ranged from a rapping ugly duckling to a stinky cheese man that meets a terrible fate.

Sophomore Bella Petit was the last contender for Becker, who broke in finals for dramatic interpretation, to which she placed fifth place overall. Thus making her come close to victory. However, her teammates have exclaimed that they are proud of how hard she worked and the effort that she put into it.

The four state speakers competed in Apple Valley April 20 against the best speakers from across the state. Their team is planning on supporting them and are ready to cheer their teammates onward. As the date approaches, all speakers are fired up and ready to go.
