Becker Schools Holds Homeless Summit

Becker Schools hosted a Homeless Summit last Thursday by inviting Becker area school administrators, counselors, social workers, county workers, businesses, churches, clubs and organizations to come together to share how people can serve homeless families and youth and explore potential collaborations.

A Becker High School student who has been living as an unaccompanied youth, spoke about his experiences, followed by a homeless parent of students in the district.

Other presenters included Jess Hartfiel, from Great River Family Promise, Joy Nadeau from Sherburne County United Way , Cindy Ley from Open Doors for Youth, Jill Johnson from Sherburne County Health & Human Services, Angela Sorgert from Sherburne County Health & Human Services and Jean Duffy, ISD 726 Homeless Liaison.

A PowerPoint presentation accompanied the speakers and featured information on the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, a definition of homeless, definitions of adjectives “fixed”, “regular” and “adequate”, maintaining school attendance and stability, responsibility of the school district, supporting school success and information on the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare - University of Minnesota.

There were also slides of “did you know?” queries to educate the audience.

At the close of the summit, there was open discussion on unmet needs and a chance for other organizations to share what they were doing to help homeless families in the area. Becker Backpack Buddies, Great River Faith in Action, Lutheran Social Services, Catholic Charities, Rise, and Tri-CAP say they provide resources such as employment services, cash assistance, nutritious meals, furniture, and transportation services.

Several organizations brought informational brochures and handouts that highlighted what they provide to individuals and families that are experiencing challenges of maintaining adequate housing and shelter.

Attendees were asked to complete a survey asking if they would be interested in being on a committee to help coordinate services, offer financial support, assist with housing resources, or adopt a family. Becker is a community that is working together to help students and families who experience homelessness.
