Becker “Relay For Life” Friday

A full schedule of events is planned for the 2015 Relay for Life of Becker® event set for Fri., July 10 at the Becker Community Center.  The event will open at 5 p.m. with survivor registration, a silent auction and a mystery box raffle inside the hospitality tent at the site.
 
The opening ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. with the presentation of The Colors by the Honor Guard from Becker American Legion Post 193, followed by the singing of the National Anthem by Laura Niday.  The invocation will then be given by Pastor Mike Pancoast from South Santiago Lutheran Church.
 
Event organizers Kate Steinbach and Cory Whiting will then welcome all participants and spectators to the event, and introduce the corporate event sponsors for this year.  After that, a presentation titled “Big lake Boys and Girls Basketball Coaches vs. Cancer” will take place, followed by the introduction of all of the 2015 Relay teams and the official team photos.
 
The 2015 Honorary Survivors will then be introduced by BHS Asst. Principal Mark Kolbinger.  Honorees for this year include Cindy Marholtz, Becky Kollman, Sharon Meyer, Nancy Lorentz and Paula Pruszinske.
 
At 6:20 p.m. the Relay Survivor and Caregiver Lap will begin with the 2015 honorees leading the way.  The list of names of “Loved Ones Lost to Cancer” will be read by Brenda Peterson at that same time.
 
Food, games, shopping and a host of other activities will get into high gear at 6:30 p.m., including rides in a fire engine courtesy of the Becker Fire Department and musical entertainment by Dean-O-Mite DJ on the grounds throughout the evening.  The “Lap Bead Count” will also begin then.
 
At 7 p.m. a performance from Starz Dance Studio will entertain the attendees, while the “Mr. and Mrs. Relay” fund-raiser concludes at 7:15 p.m.  The silent auction and mystery raffle will end at 8 p.m., and the scavenger hunt will begin at 8:15 p.m.
 
The Memory Garden and the lighting of the Luminaria will begin at 9 p.m.  The annual “Fight Back” ceremony will take place at 10:30 p.m.  A drawing for a quilt provided by Mike Garland’s “Mike’s West Coast Ride” group will take place immediately after the ceremony.
 
The event will draw to an end at midnight with the official closing ceremonies and the Final Lap turned in by the participants.
