Becker PO looking for new home

Back in April, the Becker Post Office sent out a postcard to residents inviting them to comment on the proposal to relocate the post office (next to Bill’s Superette on 1st Street in Becker) with their lease at their current space expiring.

According to the U.S. Postal Service’s postcard, they’re hoping to find:

• A facility with about 3,800 square feet of space and more than 26 parking spots within two miles of the current facility;

• Or, a smaller space (about 900 square feet) for retail operations with about 13 parking spaces. In that scenario, the postal carriers would move to Monticello Post Office.

Comments were being accepted for 45 days subsequent to the postcard hitting the mailboxes.

The relocation project consists of procuring a suitable substitute location, as close as reasonably possible to the existing location. Retail services will continue at the current Post Office until all necessary preparations are completed at the new location.

According to the Office of the Inspector General, the U.S. Postal Service manages 31,702 post offices that provide retail services such as counter assistance, postage stamps, money orders, and Post Office boxes.

The relocation process consists of a concept study, public notification, and site selection. The Postal Service informs local officials and the public of the proposed relocation. Both may comment on and appeal the plan to relocate retail operations. Both may also comment on the final site selection, but neither may appeal it unless it was disclosed during the initial public meeting.

The start date for the tear-down and reconstruction of Bill’s Superette and the adjacent buildings (including the Chiropractic Clinic and the old Anderson-Gilyard building) has not been determined as of today’s date.
