Minnesota is home to people who appreciate the amenities and qualities that trickle down from St. Paul and Minneapolis to large outstate urban communities like St. Cloud, Rochester and Duluth. But in reality, it’s usually the smaller communities and towns that makes Minnesota shine.
Smaller communities —rich in fellowship, trade and history have traditionally boasted good government practices, healthy lifestyles and top-notch fire and police services.
And one such community — the City of Becker — is being recognized for all it has to offer and is currently ranked one of the safest cities in the state of Minnesota, according to one website.
SafeWise, a national company out of Utah with over 75 years of experience in the home security industry, recently researched and generated a list of the top 15 safest cities in the state of Minnesota.
Becker made the list at #11.
To compile their list, SafeWise used the most recent FBI crime report (2012) and narrowed down the list to cities with a population of 2,500 residents or above. They analyzed the number of violent crimes, consisting of aggravated assault, forcible rape, murder and robbery, as well as property crimes, consisting of arson, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft. Then, they calculated the chance of these crimes happening out of one thousand in order to create a level playing field.
Kudos to the Becker police and fire departments.
The FBI crime report is considered a trusted source for crime statistics, however, not all cities reported complete data to the FBI. Becker’s statistics came in at 1.08 violent crimes per 1,000. Property crimes per 1,000 was at 9.32. The first three cities on the list (Mountain Iron, Plainview and La Crescent) had zero violent and property crimes reported per 1,000.
The list shows Sleepy Eye at #4 (zero violent crimes and 1.94 property crimes per 1,000), Two Harbors at #5 (0 and 4.26), Deephaven at #6 (0 and 5.75), North Oaks at #7 (0 and 6.59), Milaca at #8 (0 and 7.78), St. Charles at #9 (0 and 9.59), Albany at #10 (0 and 9.99), Becker at #11, Melrose at #12 (0.27 and 11.27), Glenwood at #13 (1.17 and 10.55), Bayport at #14 (0 and 12.22) and Caledonia at #15 (0.69 and 11.85).
