the dangers of grease fires. The Big Lake Fire Department put on a display showing the dangers of trying to put out a kitchen grease fire using water. Water causes the grease to spread around the kitchen, creating a very dangerous situation. Instead, viewers were instructed to smother the flame using a pot lid or stack of newspapers and turn off the heat on the stove. (Photo by Katherine Cantin.)

Becker and Big Lake Fire Departments put on successful open house events

Becker Fire Department (BFD) and Big Lake Fire Department (BLFD) both held their annual open house events last Saturday. Both events were very well attended.

The most popular attraction at both events was the opportunity to ride around in a fire truck, with long lines of families waiting for their opportunity. Both also had live fire demonstrations to educate the attendees on how fires are managed. BFD put on a display using a small model house made of wood to show how a fire spreads through a home. BLFD had a display featuring a model kitchen with a grease fire. Both events also offered free food for attendees, games using fire hoses, and bounce houses.
