BCC offering health and wellness program for adults

The Becker Community Center is currently offering a free health program for seniors in local communities.

The program is called SAIL (Staying Active and Independent for Life) and it’s designed for 65+ adults  who want to improve their health and well being (younger adults are also welcome).

The most significant risk factor for falling (especially for the elderly) is muscle weakness.  The SAIL program specifically works on strengthening all major muscle groups of the arms and legs.

A BCC participant that had fallen and was in rehab credits coming to SAIL prior to her accident as to why she has progressed so positively. Her PT and OT feel SAIL should be offered to surrounding communities, so the BCC decided to make it an option for guests.

The Washington State Department of Health, Injury and Violence Prevention Program originally developed the SAIL program.

SAIL is an evidence-based program. It has achieved recognition as a Title IIID Evidence-based Health Promotion Program by the Administration on Aging.

• It works:  Participants will be stronger, have better balance, feel better and this will help them stay active, independent and prevent falls.

• It’s safe:  Instructors are experienced and skilled and exercises have been tested with older adults

• It’s fun:  Participants meet other older adults, make new friends, and this will get them out of the house three days/week.

What to Expect

1).  One hour of exercise, three days/week;

2).  Classes taught by a qualified exercise instructor;

3). Participants can sit or stand—exercises are adapted for all levels of physical activity;

4) Exercises specifically designed to help maintain and improve one’s  balance.

5). Educational topics are covered during the class.  For example:  building an exercise plan, health issues, and more.

 SAIL is offered at the Becker Community Center, so if one is a member, the class is free.  There is also a punch card option if one doesn’t have a membership.

Call the Becker Community Center for more information on pricing at 763-200-4271.  Also, interested parties should check with their insurance company because some may offer a discount.
