Over 120 teenage girls descended upon the Becker Community Center Saturday night to be entertained and enjoy activities designed around hunting season in Minnesota.
There was no “theme” to the event this year, yet the majority of girls who showed up were dressed like they were attending a slumber party.
“It was a fun and crazy night, said BCC Program Supervisor Chelsea Swiggum .
Some of the activities included a giant, inflatable obstacle course in the gymnasium. One component to the course was a high “V-shaped wall” the girls would run up. The wall was fairly high so some of the girls would struggle to get over it.
“It was fun to watch how they would help and encourage each other through that part,” said Swiggum. “The girls were getting very competitive by racing each other through the course.”
Dodgeball, hula hooping and other active games were also held in the gym.
Outside the gym in the aisles of the BCC, craft tables that were a huge hit included melt beads, charm bracelets and keychains. New this year was a cheerleading bow station where the girls could pick out their bow colors and create their own bow.
One of the event’s most popular activities is the karaoke machine in the lobby where This Is My Fight Song was a very popular song choice.
The girls could wander down the hall a bit and utilize the rock wall in the adjoining room. Plus, Xbox Live was another great option, if the girls chose to play.
“We try to reach as many interests as we can with events like this because we know that every girl in attendance is so different,” said Swiggum.
A Snapchat photo booth that featured hats of all kinds, silly glasses, feather boas, masks, beauty accessories and signs with goofy sayings was a busy place for some of the girls and the attendees were extremely excited about participating in the raffle drawing for some amazing prizes.
Fantastic Sam’s donated their services by doing curls, up-dos, color hair spray and nails and the girls were treated with a special visit from Miss Baxter - United States 2017 Nicole Harris. She helped paint nails and spent the night doing activities with all the girls.
Another special visit came from the St. Cloud State University Hockey Cheerleading Team. The cheerleaders arrived looking game ready and spent the night leading the cheer bow station and enjoyed the activities with all the girls.
Saturday’s event has become a popular one over the years as wives of hunting husbands appreciate the two-and-a-half hours of free time to go out or get things done around the house.
The event was for kids aged eight to 12 or grades two through seven. Cost was $10 a child.
