4-H kids attend Project Adventure Day

This past Saturday, Benton County 4-H’ers had a chance to explore different project areas they could participate in during the Benton County 4-H Project Adventure Day.

There were 12 different sessions to choose from and participants could choose four different projects to explore. 4-H’ers explored showmanship, photography, cake decorating, flowers, rabbits, dog, horse, gardening, fashion fun and creative arts.

During the first session, there were lots of bright colored frostings for the participants to use during cake decorating.

“I think it is really easy and fun to do.” Said Lyla Timpe, third grader from Oak Park. “I’m hoping that my mom will let me decorate a cake to be judged for the Benton County Fair.”

On the other end of the cafeteria, there were flowers everywhere as participants learned about flowers and gardening.

“I made a gardening shadow box because I enjoyed decorating the box by taking things with similar colors and coordinating them together to look nice.” Said Audrie Marshik, fourth grader from Rice. “I am thinking of bringing this shadow box and other items to the Benton County Fair this summer to be judged.”

During the rabbit session the youths leaned into the middle of the table to pet the rabbit. “I enjoyed the session about rabbits while learning some information about them, like how many breeds and number of teeth.” Said Austynn McKay, fourth grader from Becker. “Now I will be ready for all of the questions that the judges ask when I go to the Benton County fair this summer.”

During the dog session, the youths learned about the dog project, watched Baron the dog do lots of tricks and made a dog pull toy to bring home.

“I have a big dog, Great Pyrenes and Blue Heeler mix named King that I made the dog tug toy for.” Said Koriana Hackett, fourth grader from Rice. “I’m thinking about joining the dog project so I can learn to teach King some tricks so that he’ll be an obedient and cool dog.”

The 4-H Project Adventure Day is a great opportunity for youth to come and get a “sampling” of several different project areas.  A huge thank you goes out to all of the 4-H Ambassadors and adult volunteers that made the day a success.
