Who’s Watching Camp Counselors?

We quarrel about the intents of Minnesota Legislators, adding on laws after laws to make society just a little more complex.

But there’s a measure introduced recently by Rep. Nick Zerwas, our representative, from Elk River, that caught our eye.

It seems people have been sending their loved young ones off to an assortment of camps each year, expecting they would return home safe and happy.
Caring, helpful, responsive camp counselors, of course, have been the key.

But over the years, there has never been a safeguard for the kids - that safeguard being background checks on the counselors.

Anybody can be a camp counselor, it seems. Even those who have had a shady past.

That concern was brought to Rep. Zerwas recently - and he’s introduced legislation to require background checks on such counselors.

He reported last week it will be likely two weeks before his bill will be taken up for review in a committee.

So, we’ll be watching it.
I’m not in favor of enacting a law to cover every cause.

But this one is legitimate.

Parents - and kids - should have that protection.
