In response to Bill Morgan’s story “Goodbye to Football” I wanted to say I watched football for the first time in a long time this weekend. The reason I watched had to do with Freedom. I believe it is wise for people to re-think what freedom truly is.
The flag stands for freedom. I also know about military personnel who have fought, served or currently serve in the military. My father and four uncles served and/or fought in the Vietnam War. I know many retired veterans and active military personnel. I honor and respect each of the military flags these men and women carry. Their service is not tied to the U.S. Flag. Realistically, it is tied to upholding the freedoms we hold.
Mother Teresa stood up for those who were oppressed. I believe these players are making a statement, a peaceful statement, for those who need a voice. Who these players are protesting for is very clear. It is a manipulation to say they are protesting any member of the U.S. Military or for that matter the United States. It is disingenuous to implore your view of freedom of speech when trying to restrict theirs. It matters not whether you agree or disagree, but whether you are brave enough to uphold the freedom of speech.
God Bless the men and women who fought and continue to fight for freedom.
