Thanks to the Sherburne County Board of Commissioners for approving a resolution on April 3 calling for the 28th Amendment to get Big Money out of politics. The resolution which aims to overturn Supreme Court rulings states:
1. Corporations are not natural persons and only natural persons are endowed with Constitutional Rights.
2. Federal, State and local governments shall have the power to regulate contributions and expenditures for elections and campaigns, and require public disclosure of the sources of contributions and expenditures for elections and campaigns.
Because of Supreme Court rulings, including Citizens United, billions of dollars are now flooding our elections and influencing our legislatures - at an unprecedented rate.
Politicians, too, know this is a problem. In 2012 Senator John McCain of Arizona, stated: “What the Supreme Court did is a combination of arrogance, naiveté and stupidity the likes of which I have never seen … I promise you, there will be huge scandals … because there’s too much money washing around, too much of it we don’t know who’s behind it and too much corruption associated with that kind of money. There will be major scandals.”
The next step in Sherburne County is for citizens to call on state legislators to pass SF 1082 and HF 2139, to put “we the people” back in power.
