To The Editor

In recent weeks, I’ve read several editorials that target staff writer Bill Morgan and seem to question his right to report on difficult and controversial subjects.

It has been questioned how Mr. Morgan can report on issues affecting the city of Becker when he does not live in the city. I patrolled the cities of Champlin and St. Cloud for 2 years and 28 years, respectively, and defended their citizens and their rights. I chose to live in Becker and raise my children here. Is it suggested that my commitment to truth and justice was diminished because I did not live in St. Cloud?  Would it also follow that our military members, who serve in other countries, do so with diminished commitment?  Because he doe n’t live here, I’ve not seen anyone question Mr. Morgan’s right to cover sporting events in Becker and report on the accomplishments of our children.

Most recently, Mr. Morgan’s report on Colin Kaepernick was questioned. I proudly wore the flag on my police uniform for 30 years and defended what it represents. My daughter, as well as many others, proudly wears the flag on her military uniform and she defends what it represents. I defend Mr. Kaepernick’s right to take a stance against racism and brutality. I cannot defend the method by which he has chosen to do so. In the editorial from Mr. Iverson, he cites from the Book of Matthew regarding ‘judging others’. It seems to me that Mr. Iverson passed judgment on Mr. Morgan when writing the editorial.
