The Spirit Within

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Kids jingle belling and everyone telling you, “Be of good cheer.” It’s the hap - happiest season of all, when friends come to call. There’ll be parties for hosting, marshmallows for toasting and caroling in the snow. And tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago. Hearts will be glowing when loved ones are near. It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

Christmas is the holiday everyone seems to love.  Many start decorating their homes before Thanksgiving. The stores promote all the latest lights and toys. The radio stations are playing Christmas music. People are out shopping for that perfect gift. In the north, the snow falls, making for a beautiful backdrop to the most favorite time of the year.

All the hustle and bustle of the season and yet, there is a sense of euphoria. People’s moods are light and lively. Giving, helping and brotherly love, is at an all-time high. Kids are full of excitement with the snow and Santa coming to town. Christmas programs at church and school begin. Holiday traditions resurface. Everything is in full swing with Christmas.

What is in the air? I feel as though there is an underlying force stirring up our spirits. Is there really something? Is there Christmas magic or is it more?

St. Nicholas was known for his generosity and kindness, especially to children. This was wonderful and we learned about giving but I don’t believe this was the true spark.

In my heart, I know it is a force greater than what we can imagine or comprehend. A presence so powerful yet gentle. Bringing light and love into our hearts. The true source of Christmas - the birth of Jesus and all that He was and would become to the world. A vision of hope, peace, love and salvation.

For most, Christmas is a wonderful time. A time of great joy and memories,  but for some people, Christmas brings sadness. Missing a loved one, financial struggles or loneliness. It can be tough.

While kindness should be practiced year round, maybe a little extra around this time could make a difference. Whether it is some encouraging words, a helping hand, a friendly smile, or a “Hello, how are you doing?” Kindness in any form can go a long way. You never know what you are sowing into someone’s life. A little “peace on earth and good will towards men.”

“If you have love in your heart and mind, you’ll have Christmas all the time.”  What a wonderful thought. It means something different to each of us. But, could you imagine,  if we carried the good feelings of Christmas in our hearts all the time, what the world might be?

For me, I’m still a kid at heart. I enjoy the snow, seeing Santa, decorating, watching Christmas movies, listening to Christmas music and presents under the tree (although most are for the kids and grandkids) I still get excited.

My mind and heart can’t help but reflect on memories of past Christmases. Not only in my youth, but when our girls were small. Family time is valuable.

Whatever your Christmas may be,  may good cheer and the blessings of peace and love fill the spirit within.
