When I befriended Patriot Reporter Katie Cantin, I was just so happy to find such a like-minded person who welcomed me, someone not native to Minnesota, into her circle. Little did I know that would lead me to an opportunity that would not only assist me with learning how to gain better technical writing skills, but also give me the chance to write for a Newspaper and the Big Lake Twp.
When Katie first asked if I was possibly interested in writing for the Patriot News MN, I was hesitant. I knew I was more of a creative writer, and the idea of going to meetings about things I was very unfamiliar with was intimidating. But the more I thought about it, the more intrigued I felt.
When I accompanied Katie to a meeting in early March of 2023, I was blown away by how kind and welcoming the BL Twp. was. It was that moment when I thought, “maybe I can do this,” and made that reality come true.
It is now coming into August of 2024. I have written dozens of articles for the BL Twp. and know more about plats, CUPs, IUPs, and road work than I ever had before. And truthfully, I wouldn’t change a single day.
Unfortunately, after four wonderful years of living in Minnesota, even with COVID, I have decided to take the next step in my own life’s journey which is taking me to the mountainy, if not a bit rainy, state of Washington.
Before I left, I wanted to give my biggest thanks to all the people who gave me this wonderful opportunity to grow and encouraged me to keep growing. To Katie who offered me this chance, To Bill Morgan with the Patriot News MN who was always patient with me and allowed me to continue writing, learning, and growing. But especially the biggest Thank you to the staff and Board of Supervisors who made every meeting at the BL Twp. welcoming and enjoyable.
Thank you for this growth, and the encouragement to keep going when I reach Washington. I hope that the BL Twp. continues to be such an inviting place, and everyone stays in good health.
I will always remember these years as some of the best experiences.
