This is your reminder to move your clocks ahead one hour on Sunday, March 9, 2025 for Daylight Savings Time or to use a common phrase, you need to “Spring Forward.” Now, I know there is debate about whether we should continue to use daylight savings time or not. Today, I’m not interested in diving into that question. Whether you love or hate daylight savings time, I think we all agree, it’s nice to get an extra hour in a day.
Many will choose to sleep in and take in an extra hour of shuteye. Afterall, we are a nation of sleep deprived people and self-care has been a thing for a while now. If sleep’s not your thing, how about getting an extra hour of reading in? I’m certain many made the New Year’s resolution to read more. I’m certain that fulfilling those resolutions is still going strong. If not, you now have an extra hour to think about what’s gone wrong and you now have a moment to reflect on how you can do better. Maybe an hour of quiet time will do you some good, but I have to ask, can an hour really make a difference in our lives.
What if you don’t care to do something for yourself, what else can an extra hour be utilized for? Maybe you could spend an hour telling the ones you love how much you value them - maybe give them an extra long hug. I know we just had Valentine’s Day, but what other day do we have where we celebrate loving others in March? What does an hour of kindness look like?
What if I broke that hour up into 12, five-minute acts of service or six acts for 10 minutes? I could go to Walmart or Target and hold a door open for a stranger or let someone with only two items jump in line in front of me because I have 10 and half of them are fruit and produce that needs to be weighed and their item number looked up because their sticker fell off. Is that being kind enough? Maybe I could donate an hour of my wages to a favorite charity to honor the hour I just received.
Maybe this year, springing forward can mean something new. Afterall, spring is a time of rebirth and renewal. It is a moment of endless possibility and hope.
Wait. . . What? We lose an hour! Maybe it’s time for Daylight Savings to end!
