Making Good Decisions

In alignment with Becker’s District mission “Developing self-directed learners to thrive in a changing global community,” Becker High School takes pride in offering courses that best prepare students for their futures.  As we approach mid-year, we are looking forward to next year and launching into our 2026-27 registration process.  It is an important and exciting time for students as they get to map out their future!

Each year staff reviews both required and elective course offerings.  Through consistent department collaboration, our course offerings follow the Minnesota State Academic Standards.  Our elective courses balance the needs and interests of students with current trends in the education world and work force.  Each year we present new options for our students and student class selection guides the courses we are offering.

We encourage students and parents to have conversations at home about their unique pathway and options.  Selecting courses is an important task that involves making good decisions that match future plans. The class offerings are designed to balance rigorous academic challenges with practical career readiness, urging students to view the guide as a roadmap to their personal goals.

Student registration numbers shape the building master schedule, influencing the number of course sections and the placement of the course(s) within our school day.  An exciting opportunity for students to become informed about their options exists in January as staff highlight and preview their course in our “Registration Showcases.”  Students learn about the prerequisites for the course, the focus of the curriculum, and potential projects if they take a certain course.

Here are some best practices to help guide the registration process:

Thoughtful Collaboration: Students should treat registration as a collaboration between parents, teachers, and counselors.

The “Four-Year” Lens: Rather than looking at the year in isolation, students are urged to chart an overall high school plan to review annually.  Do not wait until the day of registration to make your decisions.

The Need for Alternates: Due to the complexity of the schedule, students must choose alternate courses. Alternatives are often used to complete final schedules.

Students will begin officially registering late January, completing it by mid February.  While celebrating the successes of this school year, we have an eye on the 2026-27 school year and look forward to our students charting their futures!
