TO THE EDITOR:

The Monticello Area Affiliate of the Libertarian Party of Minnesota opposes House File 396, and Senate File 916, regarding firearm and ammunition storage requirements. Those who reside in outstate Minnesota often have to wait an extended period of time when calling 911 due to the greater distance law enforcement must travel.  The constitution provides us the right to protect ourselves and our families, but these bills handcuff law-abiding citizens in a potential life or death situation. If passed, these bills would make lawful gun owners criminals, while doing nothing to deter criminals from committing a crime with a gun. A number of Sheriffs across the state of Minnesota have made public statements opposing these bills.  The Monticello Area Affiliate of the Libertarian Party of Minnesota support the Sheriffs who have proactively expressed their opposition to these bills. We urge citizens to contact their state senator and representative to let them know they oppose these bills.  You can find your state representative and senator at www.gis.lcc.mn.gov/iMaps/districts/.
