TO THE EDITOR:
Last Thursday Liberty Paper and their parent company LDI recognized and awarded five local non-profit organizations. The recognition for these organizations was a wonderful showing of gratitude. One of these organizations was the Becker Lions. The Lions are very grateful for the heartfelt and generous donation to our club. The donation will be used for needs within our community. On behalf of the Becker Lions, I would like to thank Liberty Paper for their showing of support to our community.

TO THE EDITOR:
Last Thursday was a wonderful day at our Becker Area Senior Center (BASC). Liberty Paper, Inc (LPI), along with their parent company Liberty Diversified International (LDI) made July 19 a very special day for BASC. They were part of our full day, providing a delicious lunch, then prizes for our Bingo and the Presentation of a generous donation of $3500 along with a 65” TV. My gratefulness for LPI’s continual support of BASC and for our many great volunteers cannot be underestimated. Because of them we will continue to provide a place to have fun and make friends. BASC is a place for our area Seniors to socialize, play cards, exercise, do crafts, listen to speakers on various subjects and just generally stay active.
We are open every Tuesday and Thursday and are grateful for the many Seniors who pass through our doors each day. In 2013 we started with about 15 people each day; today we average 30 – 40, with some days having more than 50. It gets a little noisy when you have 4 tables of cards, exercise, a full “Table of Knowledge” and crafts. LPI has a “Dream Machine”. Well, BASC has a “Dream” of a larger facility with even more activities happening.
Thank you, LPI and everyone for supporting YOUR area Senior Center (BASC).
Carol Brunn,
BASC Director

TO THE EDITOR:
We are having a primary election Aug. 14 for Stearn's County Sheriff and we really need to have citizens get out to vote because like all mid-term election years, people have a tendency to believe these times are less important; however, the Primary on Aug. 14 election we have Dave Bentrud as our Stearns County Sheriff's candidate who wants your vote in order to move on to the general election Nov. 6.
This candidate, our candidate - is presently Waite Park Police Chief Dave Bentrud who wants to be your next Stearn's County Sheriff. We need a sheriff in Stearn's County for the whole county not one that shows up throughout the county only at election time or remains primarily near the county seat.
Counties like Stearns which have the "Seat" of the county in the corners and edges of the county require a sheriff who is cognizant of this dilemma and reacts accordingly by reaching out to the out-county citizens - continually, throughout the year. Remember this, if you are not satisfied with a "Status Quo" Sheriff's department you must vote for "change" with Waite Park Police Chief Dave Bentrud.
Just vote "BENTRUD" - on Aug. 14 because we believe he and his record rises far above his opponents in this election.

TO THE EDITOR:
The letter to the editor two weeks ago about the City Council spending 13 million dollars of the city’s tax money is a little misleading and I feel unfairly portrays our city council as spending like drunken sailors. It is the obligation of the city council to always be looking towards the future and what “May” be needed. I am pretty sure the council does not plan on spending 13 million dollars within the next year or two or even 5 years. But they do need to have a plan for the future and analyze then prioritize what is needed.
I would be more concerned if we had a city council who believed that, because today we have everything we need, we can bury our head and the sand and not plan for the future. It is also good to see they are weighing the financial options of what would make more sense. If they are going to spend the money I would hope they would have the knowledge of what is the best financial option for funding.
Maintaining a city is like maintaining a house if you aren’t constantly doing upgrades and maintaining you eventually have a house or city that no one wants.
Do we want to continue to have these extravagant expenses, the answer is probably no for all, even the city council. I am glad the council is exploring what may be needed to keep Becker from becoming a city that no one wants to move to.
