TO THE EDITOR:
March is famous for several things. . . Green Beer, March Madness, cold Minnesota winds and a whole lot more. But did you know that March is also a chance for us to give our local Food Shelf a boost? The local Clearwater-Clear Lake Food Shelf is once again participating in the “MN FoodShare March Campaign.” This giving opportunity runs until April 10, 2022. All food and financial donations made to the Clearwater-Clear Lake Food Shelf earn additional funding from the Minnesota FoodShare Food Fund.Although the Food Shelf appreciates any donations, because of the limited storage space available in the current location, money is always a good donation. Any financial donation will be matched by the FoodShare Fund, making it stretch much, much further. Many are hurting in this economy and are having to make difficult decisions which can lead to food insecurity for their family. If you are able, please support this valuable resource in our community.

Is our judicial system just? Is it just to incarcerate people for more than one year without charges or bail? That is the case for many who did not enter the Capitol on January 6th. Is it just to release repeat offenders with low or no bail before being tried for previous crimes? Is it just to tag parents as terrorists with the FBI when they brought their concerns to local school boards? Will more governments seize property and bank accounts of protesters as they did in Canada? We need to hold our judicial system and government agencies accountable. Create review boards at the state and federal levels. Board members should be elected by citizens and not appointed by politicians. The term would be no more than two years, being accountable to the voters. Judges and other elected officials need to defend our laws and the Constitution, not render judgements on their own interpretations. Recently, three policemen were convicted of manslaughter for not doing their job. Maybe the Governor and mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul should be charged with manslaughter for dereliction of duty during the riots of 2020. People died when they did not call up the National Guard immediately. The police were told to stand down.

Regarding the appearance of the Child Protection League at the Becker School Board meeting, Board Chair Swanson said “As a school board, we are learners, just like the students we serve. Therefore, a critical part of our jobs as board members is to listen and engage … with a variety of perspectives and voices to ensure a complete picture.” Mr. Swanson, who are you trying to kid?! Even your students recognize hate and bigotry when they see it. But, then again, that’s part of the “problem,” isn’t it? The Board does not want Becker’s students to learn inclusivity. Else, very, very little research on the Board’s part would have drawn you to the conclusion that inviting a hate group to speak was a horrible idea. Birds of a feather, Mr. Swanson, birds of a feather.
