TO THE EDITOR:
Twenty Thousand Dollars. The Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety has identified that can be the cost for a DWI when factoring in court costs, legal fees and increased insurance premiums. dps.mn.gov/divisions/ots/laws/Pages/impaired-driving.aspx I do not know anyone who has twenty thousand dollars to lose. Think of all the wonderful things you could do with money like that. You could take a vacation, pay off bills or send your kid to college. It would be like winning a small lottery. Just think...
Unfortunately for 490 individuals last year at Thanksgiving time, they didn't think and forfeited their potential $20,000 due to their choice to drive while under the influence. If you do the math, 490 times $20,000 is$ 9.8 million. Just think...
So next time you go out for drinks, just think about the twenty thousand dollars. Do yourself, and many others, a favor and choose to arrange for a sober ride before you start drinking.
Kathleen A. Heaney,
Sherburne County Attorney.
