Thank you to Becker High School students and staff a forceful presentation.
This play took me back to 20 years ago when the citizens of Laramie Wyoming and our nation were faced with the brutal beating and death of a young homosexual man. Soon after the death, the director and staff of the Tectonic Theater Project went to Laramie and in over a year, succeeded in interviewing over 200 members of community’s reaction to the tragic event.
In the play the students played multiple roles of Laramie citizens and interviewers. I heard very convincing and varied tones of anger, fear, tolerance, distain, determination and unanswered questions. Thank you students for a stellar performance. Although we want to put the pain of that tragic incident behind us, I felt that the students were asking us to examine the subject of sexual orientation today. Thank you students for asking me consider sexual orientation not as a life style but as an important part of every person’s identity. Keep the conversation going.
I do not live in Becker and read about the Becker High School play in the Citizen-Tribune. The Becker Community can be very proud of the Becker High School Performance Arts Center. It is a beautiful building with good acoustics.
