Inclement Weather Announcements

The cold weather is a great reminder of the difficulty in determining safe conditions for our students as they venture to and from school.  Mother Nature’s timing is not always optimal and weather-related decisions are always very challenging.

There are a great number of considerations that take place to determine whether to delay, close, or even cancel school.  Think about the difference in six inches of snow in December compared to six inches of snow in April.  The temperatures, seasonal sun position, and so many other factors come into play during these decisions.

While a large number of students tend to appreciate the joy that can come from a school cancellation, there are students who would not be able to have care, food, or in some cases shelter during the day, if school is canceled or delayed.

There are also a number of key stakeholders who help to make a decision that suits the needs of our students.  Becker Public School District administration works with other local schools, transportation directors, and a number of other staff members to determine what is the best decision when facing inclement weather.

Buses and cars travel entirely different on diverse road conditions, and the sudden stopping and starting of the bus can be both beneficial and detrimental to the traveling process.

The decision to delay or cancel school will be made as soon as possible with the information available.

You can get instant updates via the school district’s Twitter and Facebook for this information. You may also view online sites such as WCCO, KSTP, KMSP, KARE11, or get radio updates through KRWC-AM1360.

Here are some guidelines to consider when poor weather is in the forecast and while each situation is different, these are the most typically followed, but may change as needed:

1). The Superintendent and Director of Transportation will participate in inclement weather webinars provided by the National Weather Service.

2). If there is a late start, there will not be AM Early Childhood, Camp Opp is regular schedule.

3). If school is canceled prior to 8 pm the night before, there will not be AM/PM Early Childhood, Camp Opp is also canceled.

4). If school is canceled after 8 pm the night before, there will not be AM/PM Early Childhood, Camp Opp will remain open, as regularly scheduled.

5). If school is canceled for the third time or after, the Becker School District may have an E-Learning/Digital Learning Day.  Please watch for announcements about this potential built in make-up day.
