How Referendum Impacts Our Communities

(Editor’s Note: The following article was submitted by the Supt. of Becker Public Schools).

From safety and capacity to deferred maintenance and improved educational spaces, the proposed referendum would provide improvements across all District buildings for a net-zero tax increase above the current rate. So, how would the referendum impact our students, staff, and community members?

1). Safety and security would be greatly improved: We know our communities expect safe schools, and currently, every entrance needs improvements. This is a critical part of the proposed referendum and would improve safety across all District buildings.

2). Additional space would resolve capacity issues: Our students need room to learn, and we currently need additional space as our communities grow. An addition, including several classrooms and associated support spaces, would be added to the Middle School and realigning grades would aid in resolving capacity needs at all levels.

3). Our deferred maintenance needs would be addressed: It’s no secret - our buildings are aging and infrastructure needs to be improved including roofs, HVAC, electrical, and lighting systems, doors, and more. The proposed referendum would help address these needs that are above and beyond our existing annual maintenance budget.

4). Enhanced educational spaces would provide more opportunities: Improved educational spaces, such as our Industrial Tech Education at the High School, will allow us to prepare our students for their future - whatever path they decide to take. Having these types of spaces would allow us to further our community industry partnerships that provide additional opportunities for our Bulldogs.

We encourage you to submit your questions and feedback during this process. Absentee voting for the referendum is available starting this Friday, March 26 through May 10 and Election Day is Tuesday, May 11.
