Helping Ruby Heal

I heard recently, through a friend, about a family in the cities going through a rough situation. I asked my friend to reach out to the family so I might share their story with you, and they were kind enough to meet with me.

Ruby was living her life as a 22 year old Renaissance Fair girlie (which I relate to) when what first appeared to be normal acne on her cheek became swollen and inflamed. It got to the point where Ruby went to seek medical help for it and checked into the hospital. Doctors found that the pimple had become infected, and the infection slowly spread into her brain. Ruby ended up having severe complications from the infections, including a series of strokes which have left her immobilized and non-vocal.

Ruby’s mom, Tabitha, created a Go Fund Me page originally to help pay for transport to and from the hospital, so she could see her daughter every day.

Fortunately, Ruby was stabilized and had the opportunity to return home on Tuesday.

Ruby’s doctors haven’t had high hopes for her prognosis, suggesting that Ruby may never walk again, or be able to care for herself.

However, Ruby’s stepfather, Zack, had a grandmother who suffered from a severe stroke in her 20s and went on to get married and raise her children, all while having the use of only one of her hands.

They noted how Ruby has always been the first one to support her family members through hard times. Her auntie, Jaymie, especially noted how much of an emotional rock Ruby has been for her. Jaymie is a former Marine who was wounded and suffered brain trauma in the line of duty. And she says she wouldn’t be here today were it not for all the love and support she received from Ruby.

And Ruby’s boyfriend has also been supporting her recovery, working with her daily to help move her limbs and hopefully help her to move again on her own, spending days and nights in the hospital by her side.

Now, her family wants to return the favor, and, armed with personal knowledge of the strengths of stroke survivors and Ruby’s own brand of dragon-like fighting spirit, they are very optimistic that with time and help, Ruby will be able to recover her voice and go on to live the best life she can.

They are still looking for financial assistance through Go Fund Me, in order to purchase a vehicle which can accommodate multiple wheelchairs and service dog training for Ruby’s dog, Gomez, among other wishlist items.

If you are compelled to help, their Go Fund Me can be found at TinyURL.com/Help-for-Ruby.
