SEW FINE. Tina Coleman, at her home near Clear Lake with a baptismal gown she made for a local family. She is pictured in her cozy sewing room, which is complete with a couch and her Bible, where she starts every day with a devotion and prays for the people she sews for.

Clear Lake Woman Creates Special Gowns For Monumental Days

Tina Coleman loves to sew. She started sewing out of necessity at the age of 8, when her family of seven immigrated to the United States from the Netherlands and had little money for clothing.

"I started sewing out of necessity, but as time moved on, I started to sew for neighbors and as a young adult I found my niche designing and making wedding gowns and prom dresses", Tina explained. Her sewing business evolved from there.

Soon, the women Tina had made bridal gowns for were knocking at her door asking if she could design baptismal gowns using their bridal dresses.

Tina told me: "I've always had a strong faith in God and it has become a great love to make baptismal gowns, I treasure each one, knowing I have the privilege of being a part of such an important day. As I finish the gown, I say a small prayer for the wonderful child who will be blessed and introduced to God."

Tina and her husband, Rick, moved here from Michigan 15 years ago. “We decided to retire in Minnesota because of the wonderful people we met in our many travels.  ‘Minnesota Nice’ is alive and well and very much appreciated. Our two children and three grandchildren still live in Michigan, so we go visit them, but Minnesota is our home. We love it here!”, Tina told me.

Tina was quick to point out that her husband is always supportive of her sewing projects. She had this to say: “Rick is my support system and his encouragement helps me look forward to whatever project comes my way!”

Tina's sewing also includes doing alterations, but she feels there is something very special about making  baptismal gowns. Most of the gowns she  makes are white or antique but there are a few requests for pale colors and embroidered lace.  Because every person has their own vision, Tina makes it a goal to come as close as possible to what the customer has in mind.

Each dress is customized, so there is no stock in her studio. “Every dress has my full attention from start to finish and no gown is reproduced. Many have become heirlooms and are handed down to the next generation. Designing comes naturally and easily to me so making a special gown for such a monumental day is a joy and an honor", Tina shared.

Tina has an artistic background in stained glass and owned her own company for 17 years.  She began her sewing career with Walt Disney World in Florida, where she worked for three years in the early 1970's, creating the window dressings for the shops on Main Street.

Tina continued: “My favorite part of sewing for people is the opportunity it gives me to meet such a large variety of interesting people.  The best part is the look they get when their personal vision of a wedding gown, prom dress or baptismal layette becomes a reality.  Many times there are happy tears and hugs that are priceless to me."

Tina is also part of a quilting group at a local church, where she has learned the art of hand quilting - providing a new avenue to express herself.

Tina’s love of sewing is evident. Her enthusiasm and sunny disposition are refreshing.  Tina shared these parting words: “Every day is an adventure.  There are always new projects to enjoy and wonderful people to meet.  I am very blessed!”
