Casting The First Stone

Ah Halloween.

It’s never been put past me that the October holiday precedes an election every year. Lots of masks, costumes and scary imagery surrounding the end of one month leading into another.

Some of the costume and mask-wearers this time of year do so to draw attention or compare themselves to people of merit. Others use the masks and costumes to hide their real selves or protect their past behavior.

Some of the vampires and werewolves you see out there this time of year are indeed hiding behind past sins, convictions and criminal charges. They know if they are exposed, the result could take a bite out of their chances for election or running for future offices.

Some of the witches, ghosts and ghouls have suspicions and accusations of impropriety with people they are watching over and some  are triggered by stress. They try to conceal who they really are with makeup, sheets or big, pointy hats. Their secrets, if exposed would make many people scream in horror.

Some of the superhero costumes out there are covering the scabs and scars of arrests, wrongful acts, fake personas and outright lies. Their chest emblems and long capes can’t help hide their domestic assault charges, sleeping with the enemy and/or intoxication sins.

Some of the “Jasons” and “Mike Meyers’” hide behind hollow eyes and closed mouths — cowering in dark corners — in the hopes of not being discovered for their misdeeds. If people knew of their obstruction of justice charges and their acceptance of money for favors, maybe the people would chop up their allegiance to such fools.

Then again, maybe the one who sees others in costume is a costume-wearer too.

Costumes and masks provide cover and hide the real people in them from the public. Under all the makeup, the costume, the hats, the masks and the wigs — even under the skin of everyone you see — there is a skeleton. And all skeletons are the same.

Skeletons are skulls and rib cages and spines and digits. Everyone who is human has the same bone system. However, what lies just above the bones is what everyone sees and sometimes it ain’t very pretty.

Skeletons are the personification of Halloween and skeletons in the closet are the embodiment of elections. Skeletons are bones and bones can be ultra strong or quite brittle.

Just don’t forget. When you pick up that stone to cast it,  better be careful to not shatter your own bones.
