JACKIE HUBBARD, captain of the University of Minnesota womens cross country team in 1988.

2 Faces From Past We Shouldn’t Forget

By Gary W. Meyer, Editor

It has been a whirlwind of activity as our staff has prepared the 2018 BHS Centennial book.

Many stories are in the book; many more are not.

But we need to acknowledge the efforts of several at the school, including Mark Kolbinger, for their outstanding research and writing of Bulldog sports over the years.

I asked Mark to run with the story; that he did, bringing together decades of memories for readers to enjoy.

Two stories we need to acknowledge both occured in December, 1988.

Jackie Hubbard and her cousin, Charlene, were prolific stars in the classroom and on the cross country course for the Bulldogs, winning just about every meet possible.

They both went on to college and a story about Jackie caught our eye in looking at past issues of the West Sherburne Tribune.

Jackie, after becoming an All-America runner at South Dakota State University, enrolled at the University of Minnesota, where she helped the Gopher women to several high finishes in Big 10 and national competition.

That month, she was selected as the Gophers’ womens cross country team captain.

Kolbinger, the sports writer, could have put himself into a story, but he didn’t.

So, we will. Mark, a junior at BHS at the time, helped his Bulldog basketball team to a stunning 66-63 victory over rival Big Lake, which was favored to win.

The Bulldogs used a 22-8 fourth quarter advantage to come back for the win.

Teammates helping in the victory included Justin Hegna, the top scorer, Jeremy Karpinski, Mike Lundeen, Kory Olson and James Husmann.

Victories over Big Lake have always been special for Becker. They had a right to savor that one.

We want to acknowledge all the graduates who contributed stories for the Centennial book.

Several, upon being asked why I selected them to write, were told: “I don’t know you, so I don’t know your stories.

“Get your classmates together and jabber like it was a class reunion.

“The stories will come.”

That they did.

Congratulations to all.
