The Hornet football team was unable to contain Chisago Lake’s ground game, as the Wildcats ran for 293 yards and six touchdowns last week.
A second quarter touchdown brought Big Lake within eight early, but the Wildcats responded with 28 unanswered points over two quarters to put the game away.
Big Lake received the opening kickoff and drove to midfield before a quarterback sneak was stopped on fourth down. From there, Chisago took advantage of the short field, driving down and taking an early 7-0 lead. The home team would get one more in the first quarter to lead 14-0 at the end of one.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, Reid Josewski plunged into the endzone from two yards out for the Hornets’ first score of the game. However, the next 20 minutes of gametime would be all Wildcats. The home team scored 28 straight points to take a commanding 42-6 lead. Big Lake stopped the streak with a Carson Gellerman two-yard touchdown run. Gellerman then found Jack Midas for a successful two-point try, making the score 42-14. Chisago scored once more in the fourth quarter to make the final score 49-14.
Gellerman finished the day 15/21 passing for 131 yards and an interception. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 68 yards on the ground. Carter Stromberg had 25 rushing yards and 13 receiving yards. Midas was Gellerman’s favorite target with six catches for 46 yards. Owen Wilczek caught three passes for 32 yards.
Braedyn Wemple had a season-high 15 total tackles to lead the team. Tanner Muenkel added eight himself. Josiah Sanford and Evan Blackman both had seven tackles, and Blackman added a forced fumble. Montell Hester had five total tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble.
The team will celebrate homecoming this Friday when they take on Princeton. The Tigers are 4-0 on the season and are ranked #6 in Class AAAA. It will be the third ranked opponent in four weeks for the Hornets. The game will take place at 6 p.m. on Fri., Sept. 27.
