MICHAEL VELDMAN (M) AND DAWSON BROWN (R) posed with their Head Coach Dwight Lundeen (L) following Saturday’s North/South All-Star game at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud.

South Beats North, Veldman And Brown See Limited Duty

Becker’s Michael Veldman and Dawson Brown didn’t get much room to shine last weekend as the South beat the North, 21-10 in the 2015 High School All-Star game at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud Saturday afternoon.

Veldman played briefly, completing just two passes for 19 yards and left the game in the fourth quarter with a minor injury.

Brown was unable to steal the spotlight like he did during last fall’s state championship game in which he intercepted the ball three times.

Both the North and South All-Star teams struggled on offense the entire game. The score was just 10-7 heading into the fourth quarter with the North All-Stars opening the game with a safety in the first quarter, then they tacked on a 21-yard TD and two-point conversion in the third to the South’s 16-yard TD in the second.

In the fourth quarter with 3:57 left, South quarterback Ryan Schlichte of Mankato West ran in the go-ahead touchdown from four yards out to put South up 13-10. Just a minute- forty later, running back William Rains added a 35-yard touchdown run with 2:19 left for the final margin.

The North let Rains score with the strategy of trying to get the ball back more quickly for a better chance to win. It was a strategy that certainly backfired for an offense that mustered 249 yards of total offense.

Veldman and Brown make players 20 and 21 who have played in the All-Star game under Head Coach Dwight Lundeen. Mike Grant holds the all-time record for most all stars with 46 — eight when he was with Forest Lake and 38 while with Eden Prairie.

Veldman makes it a multi-generation of all-star players in his family, joining his brother Matt who made the squad in 2007 and their father, Gregg, who made it in 1978.

Brown, who stands at 6’2” and weighs 195-lbs., is the son of Todd and Pat Brown. He has a sister, Molly (28), and two brothers, Denver (28) and Gavin (22). Dawson was a captain and was named Monster Man (most defensive points) his senior year. He was all-conference both his junior and senior years. He tied the state record with three interceptions in the Prep Bowl against DeLaSalle.

Brown was also all-conference in tennis (four years), all-conference in basketball (senior year), a state participant in tennis (junior year), a captain in tennis (junior, senior years), in basketball (senior year) and football (senior year). He also was a participant in Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Brown will be attending Bethel University this fall.

Michael Veldman is 6’4” and weighs 190-lbs. He is the son of Gregg and Stacy Veldman and Michael has one sister, Lauren (20) and two brothers, Matthew (26) and Ryan (25).

Veldman was a Mr. Football finalist and named conference and team MVP. He was named the St. Cloud Times’ Player of the Year and was part of the Minnesota Vikings All-State team. Michael was a two-time all-conference player in basketball and scored over 1,000 points in his high school career. He will be attending North Dakota State this fall.
