Seniors propel Bulldog girls over Hornets; Claim M8 title

A five game conference win streak over the past two weeks of the season gave the Becker Bulldog girls basketball team yet another M8 Conference title.

February 20 was Senior Night for the squad, as the Bulldogs honored their veteran players and were rewarded with a convincing, 75-42, win over their Hwy. 10 rivals from Big Lake.

Senior manager Nora Pilarski was honored before the game for her contributions, and then classmates Paige Hennen, Claire Leither, Alexa Voller, Lexi Rose and Avery Johnson were announced as the starting lineup.  When the group took the court, they didn’t disappoint, playing a wide open game, running up and down the court and pushing the tempo.

The Bulldogs used the Senior Night crowd energy to their advantage, racing to a 16-3 lead over the Hornets.  The Bulldogs kept expanding that lead throughout the half and eventually led 48-20 at halftime.  Rose led the offensive onslaught with 24 points in the first half, including four bombs from beyond the three-point line.

Big Lake was led by Rylie Sternquist and her 10 points, while Alexis Moen added nine.  Shiloh Elliott had eight for the Hornets, while Mya Knapp added seven, Emily Turbeville one, Kadyn Dilger two, Raina White two, Greta Layton one, and Lexie Parks two.

Becker scoring: Adele Changamire five, Paige Hennen eight, Lauren Croal five, Alexa Voller five, Josie Reckelberg six, Lexi Rose 29, Avery Jonson three, Tess Brown 14.

Last Thursday, Becker secured the conference title with a 62-59 win over the Monticello Magic.

The Magic came into Becker and started the game with a high level of confidence, racing to a 30-22 halftime lead before the Bulldogs came back in the second half to score 40 points to secure the win.

“We shot 49% from the field, and hit 11 three’s to Monticello’s three,” Coach Dan Baird said. “Andie Changamire hit a clutch three down the stretch to help secure the victory.  Andie is gaining in confidence each and every day.  She’s a fun player to watch improve!”

Rose was once again amazing, scoring 26 points for the Bulldogs, while Adele Changamire stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, three assists and three steals.

Last Friday, Becker ended the regular season with a 70-41 win at Chisago Lakes.

Twelve different Bulldogs saw action in the game, as Rose scored 19 and Andie Changamire posted 11 points on five-of-nine shooting.

Becker, the number one seed in the section tournament, improved to 18-8 on the season and was scheduled to play number eight seed St. Francis on Thursday.  The Saints were the team that ended Becker’s conference winning streak last month.
