High School girls and boys golfers from across the state settled in Becker late this week to participate in the 2015 Section 5AA tournament at Pebble Creek.
Thursday morning saw the girls tee off starting around 8:30 a.m. while the boys hit the course around noon. The weather Thursday was ideal — lots of sunshine, little wind and temperatures in the upper 70’s.
The section tournament and subsequent state tournament in two weeks (June 9-10) is a huge boon to the Becker area as numerous busloads and carloads of players, coaches and families consolidate at local hotels, restaurants and stores for the big weekend of fun.
Dwight Lundeen again was the chair of the event — hired by the Minnesota State High School League. His job was to make sure the foursomes played briskly so players wouldn’t have too much lag time waiting at tee boxes for other groups to play through.
The parking lot at the golf course accommodates the schools by providing reserved parking spots for each school’s van or bus. The Community Center is also on call to provide overflow parking space and shuttle service should space be limited for guests to the tournament.
The golfers used the White and Red course for the tournament while the Blue nine was utilized by the general public. They played Thursday, then took the weekend off to complete the section tournament on Monday, June 1.
Teams competing are: Breck, Dassel-Cokato, Delano, Glencoe-Silver Lake, Rockford, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, Hutchinson, Litchfield, Mound, Annandale, Providence Academy, Norwood Young America, Watertown-Mayer, Minneapolis Patrick Henry, Maple Lake and Holy Family.
