Lots Of Storylines To Watch With Girls Track Team

The Becker Bulldog girls high school track season is in full swing as runners, jumpers and throwers all begin the road to Hamline University in June for the state tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs feature a deep assortment of talented track athletes, especially ones who have been in Coach Trish Reimer-Kealy’s program for many years.

“I volunteered to coach in 2005 and took over the program in 2006 and have enjoyed every year I’ve been doing this,” said Reimer-Kealy. “It’s a family thing and I hope to be doing this for many more years.”

Reimer-Kealy knows where a lot of her athletes stand and what talents they possess but she is especially curious to see how some of her younger athletes perform who may start the season “under the radar” but rise up as the season progresses.

“We have a very young team and they are still learning,” she said. “What I like is they all have a lot of enthusiasm and enjoy learning the sport and being with their friends.”

Athletes to keep an eye on this year include Hannah Schmidt, who took sixth at sections last year in pole vault and looks to have another stellar year. She was also the team’s highest scorer, MSHSL honor roll recipient, All-State academic and a letter winner.

Trish’s daughter, Madi, also looks to have a dazzling year after she ran well in the 1600 and the relay teams.

“The hurdlers are looking good, especially Montanna (Edling) and Haley (Hubbard),” said Reimer-Kealy. “Lexi (Michels) looks strong in sprints, as well as Shannon (Sydow) and Hubbard and Edling should also do well in the high jump.

The team will be captained by Madi Kealy and Marissa Moeller, the only two seniors on the team.

“I think our roles as seniors is to act like leaders, help the younger girls and get them to pass it on,” said Moeller.

“I want to help make track fun for the younger kids and set an example for how to perform out there,” says Kealy.

Moeller hopes to set a personal record of 35 feet in the shot put (30 feet is her best) and Kealy hopes to run the mile in under 5:45 and achieve a 2:30 in the 800.

“Mentally, I need to be better than I was last year,” she said.

“Being on track can be hard inwardly because you are both trying to work as a team, but also achieve your best individually,” said Moeller. “Sometimes, that can be the toughest part of this sport.”

The roster for the 2014 girls track team features: Michaela Allen, Lauren Brower, Allie Carver, Kailey Cleaver, Montanna Edling, Allie Hendrickson, Sierra Hietala, Mikayla Hiltner, Haley Hubbard, Madi Kealy, Madison Kerzman, Siera Knick, Kylie Kollman, Christina Kotten, Aubree Lahr, Deedra Lawrence, Michaela Manifold, Lexi Michels, Marissa Moeller, Haley Olsen, Lexi Reichle, Jessica Robertson, Jada Rositas, Hannah Schmidt, Kassidy Severson, Tate Spinner, Lauren Sticha, Asia Storkamp, Shannon Sydow, Maesyn Thiesen, Mauren Thiesen, Renee Tripp and Morgan Youngdahl.
