Lady Bulldogs fall to Flyers, tie Hutch

The Becker girls soccer team suffered another defeat, this time at the hands (or feet) of Little Falls last Thursday, 5-1. They pulled out a tie with Hutchinson Tuesday.

Little Falls 5, Becker 1

The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Little Falls Sept. 2 and the match was played in wet conditions and constant drizzle.  With 37:52 left in the first half, the Flyers got the first goal to go up 1-0.

Becker countered that goal with one of their own at 36:17 when junior Hailey Szabla snuck one past the Flyer goaltender to tie the match. Junior Rachel Fuller assisted on the goal.

However, the Bulldogs once again fell behind at 31:34 whne Little Falls scored to make it 2-1. They followed that goal up with wnother with 19:41 left in the first frame to make it 3-1.

The Flyers poured in two more goals after the break (at 30:57 and 25:34) to extend the lead to four, which ended up being the final score after regulation.

Becker senior goalkeeper Amanda Miner had 13 saves.

“We actually played really well and were on their half almost the entire game,” said Becker Head Coach Ben Strom.  “We just ran into a team that was extremely efficient in front of our goal.”

Becker 1, Hutchinson 1

A loud, boisterous and supportive crowd welcomed the girls for their first home match of the year. The weather was pleasant with plenty of sun and a slight breeze.

Hutchinson would score first with just over 19 minutes left in the first half. But Becker’s Kennedy Rusin tied it on a pass from Cassidy Paumen with 4:13 left. The ball was struck from nearly 80 feet away from the goal and eluded the Tiger goaltender, just under the cross bar.

The two teams traded numerous scoring chances throughout the match including Riley Norberg ringing a shot from the corner off the far post. However, the two teams settled for a tie in regulation and a chance or two in overtime.

Two five-minute OT sessions are played in their entirety and after the first session, the teams switch sides. The final score is whatever the tally is after the second session. No sudden death, or golden goal. No tie-breaker shootout.

After the two sessions, no one scored so the match was called a draw.

Becker outshot Hutchinson 16 shots to 12. Miner had 13 saves.

“It was an exciting game,” said Coach Strom. “The team really gelled and they looked great, especially later in the game. They should be extremely proud of the way they played.”
