The Big Lake softball team won twice over last week, including a 6-5 victory over Monticello that went nine innings last Friday.
After Monticello went down in order to start the game, the Hornets jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to four first inning hits. Ava Prosser led off the game with a single, then, after two outs, Tessa Fjone singled to move Prosser over to second. A single from Alyssa Windorski scored the first run for the Hornets. Then Katyln Baron singled to score two more and give the Hornets a three-run lead after one.
The Magic got one run back in the top of the third, but the Hornets answered right back with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Leading 5-1 heading into the fifth, Big Lake looked in control of the game, but Monticello was able to chip away and claw back into the game. The visitors scored one run in the fifth and sixth and then tied the game with two more runs in the top of the seventh. Big Lake looked poised to end the game in the seventh, putting a runner on third with two outs but they were unable to bring her in.
In extras it was Monticello threatening again in the top of the eighth. A leadoff single followed by a Hornet error put runners on second and third with nobody out. But the Big Lake defense turned a double play and got the next batter to pop up to the short stop to end the threat. Neither team put any runners on base in the bottom of the eighth or top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Ava Prosser singled with one out. A fielder’s choice gave the Magic two outs and appeared to end the threat. However, a two-out single by Kamrynn Tschritter gave the team a runner in scoring position. And Fjone provided the winning run with a single to right field scoring Desi Dudek and giving the Hornets a 6-5 victory.
Prosser went 4-5 and scored two runs, while Tschritter and Fjone each had three hits each. Fjone and Macy Bowne combined to earn the win in the circle.
Last Thursday the team defeated Cambridge-Isanti 9-6 in a game that saw all its scoring occur in the last three innings. Scoreless after four, the Bluejackets took a 1-0 lead before Big Lake answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. C-I got one run back, but the Hornets scored six in the sixth to extend their lead to 9-2. And the team was able to withstand the Bluejacket’s rally in the top of the seventh to hold on for a 9-6 win.
Baron reached base safely all four times she stepped up to the plate tallying two singles, a double, and a walk. She also drove in two runs. Fjone and Tschritter each had a double as well. Addy Chaffee, Dudek, Prosser, and Windorski all recorded one hit.
On Tuesday the team lost 6-5 to the Zimmerman Thunder. An early 5-0 hole was too much for the Hornets to overcome, despite the team totaling 12 hits. Tschritter had three herself while Fjone and Sam Nohernberger had two each.
This week the team will travel to Monticello on Friday and play Princeton at home next Tuesday.
