Hornets lose to Apollo, 35-12

The Big Lake Hornet football team dropped their second game of the season, this time to Apollo High School at home Friday night by a score of 35-12.

The game was basically over after the first quarter as each team did their scoring in the first 12 minutes while the rest of the game was scoreless.

Apollo scored the first three times they touched the ball, one on a 52-yard TD pass (XP was no good), one on a 76 yard TD pass (two-point conversion good) and one on a three yard run. Big Lake would answer with a Hayden Thieke 22 yard TD pass from Tyler Anderson, but the two-point conversion failed and the Hornets were behind 21-6.

Moments later, Apollo scored on another bomb from 46 yards out and another good two-pointer had them up 29-6. As the quarter wound down, Apollo managed another TD on a one yard run and they were up 35-6 in the waning minutes.

Big Lake would close out the first quarter with a 33 yard TD pass from Anderson to Johnny O’Brien to make it 35-12.

And the fireworks ended.

Big Lake finished with running 57 plays to Apollo’s 65. The Hornets amassed 188 yards to Apollo’s 400 (331 in passing yards). Big Lake finished with 11 first downs to Apollo’s 14. Apollo was six-for-13 on third downs while Big Lake was two-of-12.

Anderson finished the game with four completions on 15 attempts for 58 yards and two TDs. Rieley Mullen carried the ball for 54 yards on 18 attempts while Thieke gained 35 yards on six carried.

O’Brien had two receptions for 44 yards including the 33 yard TD catch.

Mullen was the star on defense as he had three tackles and one assist with one sack and one tackle for a loss.
