Hornets 5th at home wrestling invitational

The Big Lake Wrestling team finished fifth of eight teams at the Big Lake Invitational last Friday.

Seven Hornets placed in the top five spots in their weight classes.

Austin Frederickson had the team’s highest finish, taking second at 215 pounds. The senior pinned Kyle Nye of Amery at 0:20 in his first match. He pinned Eric Bowen of Minnewaska at 1:36, but lost a 5-4 decision to Brecken Andres of Pierz in the championship match.

Elijah Schaller took third at 121 pounds. He pinned Owen Wiger of Sartell at 1:35 in his first match, before losing  a 10-0 decision to champion Rylan Gruber of Pierz. He pinned  Colton Carlson of Albany at 0:50, then beat Breken Navarro of Kerkhoven Murdock Sunburg (KMS) by 18-2 tech fall in his final match.  

Jaylen Rand finished third at 133 pounds. After an opening round 13-9 loss to Rowan Steward of Sartell, he pinned Brecken Gruber of Pierz at 5:11, then pinned Landon Schaudenecker of Byron at 3:26 in his final match.

Liam Mayer placed third at 189 pounds. He opened with an 18-10 win over Wyatt Rudningen of KMS before losing, 14-2 to Jayden Zajac of Pierz. He pinned Sawyer Erickson of Minnewaska at 1:22, then beat Brad Tanner of Pierz, 11-7 in his last match.

Hank Kuchera took fifth at 285 pounds. He pinned Preston Wilson of Minnewaska at 3:07 in his first match, then lost by pin to Peyton Allen of Sartell. He lost by pin to Zayden Johnson of Minnewaska, then won by forfeit over Preston Wilson of Minnewaska in his final match.

JT Rector placed fifth at 145 pounds. He had two bye wins for the evening.

Lucas Hemmesch was fifth at 107 pounds. He had two bye wins on the evening.

The Hornets wrestled in a triangular meet at Becker Tuesday and hosted St. Francis Thursday, results next week. They compete in the Maple Grove Invitational today (Saturday).
