Hornet dance concludes historic season

The Big Lake dance team saw their season end on Saturday at the section meet at ROCORI.

The varsity jazz achieved a sixth place finish out of 14 teams, and kick came in ninth. The team’s jazz performance was the highest placement in a section meet in over 20 years. And their score of 504 was the highest ever received in program history.

“With over half of our team getting sick the last two weeks of season and having just one practice during that two weeks (the day before) with everyone in formation, I could not be more proud of our final performance!” said Head Coach Kayla Olson, “We persevered, stayed positive, and made it happen. I am so proud of everything we accomplished this season- and to think that 1/3 of our varsity kick team are middle schoolers. I am so excited for everything that’s to come. The future looks bright for the BLDT. We are excited to start planning for next year!”

Some accomplishments from the varsity jazz season include five of the top 10 scores in program history, most top three placements in a season, placing at every invite, and three first place finishes.

Varsity kick’s season accomplishments include breaking the program score record twice, most top three places in a season, two first place finishes, and the largest team in program history.

The team also saw four members selected to the All-State dance team for the first time ever. Representing Big Lake in jazz will be senior captains Madeline Peterson and Calissa Pishney. And the kick representatives will be sophomore Morgan Panek, and, making her second consecutive All-State appearance, senior captain Victoria Lundquist. The All-State Showcase will take place on March 8 at Prior Lake High School.

Monticello, Becker, and St. Francis will represent Section 4AA at the state tournament next Friday and Saturday.
