Gymnasts Close Out Regular Season With Conference Title

The Bulldog girls gymnastics team have won the Granite Ridge Conference title for the fourth year in a row and finished undefeated in the GRC.

Saturday, Becker hosted the conference championships with Rush City/Pine City/Hinckley-Finlayson, Rockford, Maple Lake, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted/Trinity and Little Falls competing.

Team results in the conference were decided according to the results of this meet plus records throughout the season.

Floor Exercise
Becker began the event on floor and the girls came out and performed great routines.  The Bulldogs had one small mistake and one large mistake but Head Coach Jen Harmoning said “it was a decent start for us, but we can definitely do better.”

Hannah Schmidt earned the #1 spot with an impressive 9.2 score followed by a tie between Miranda O’Brien and Lindsay Olsen (9.1).

Vault Exercise
Vault went very well for Harmoning’s team.

“We had three really great piked tsuks and Haley Hubbard's superb twisting vault,” she said. “This is a great event for us where we can really gain a good advantage over other teams.”

Three girls tied for the top score on vault including Becker’s Schmidt and Miranda O’Brien and Maple Lake’s Jordan Sifferle (9.25).

Uneven Bars Exercise
Bars was fairly strong, but again the team had one small and one big mistake.  Coach Harmoning says her athletes are still capable of more on this event and will be working hard for it over the next week before the section tournament.

Haley Olsen emerged with the top score of 8.85.

Beam Exercise
On beam, the girls scored a season-high team score.

“It was a pretty good day for us on beam, but still not what we can do,” said Harmoning.

Top “beamer” was Schmidt with an 8.95, followed by O’Brien with an 8.9.

1). Schmidt (BB), 8.95; 2). O'Brien (BB), 8.9; 3). Murawski (RPHF), 8.8; 4). Nicole Meier (RPHF), 8.675; 5). Louden (BB), 8.6; 6). Schultz (RR), 8.525; 7). Lindsay Olsen (BB), 8.425; 8). Katie Meier (RPHF), 8.35.

“Overall, we had a good day, but it wasn't a superb day,” said Harmoning. “We are going to work as hard as we can over the week to help find that superb day within ourselves, and then we're going to do our best to put it out on the floor at the section tournament on Saturday.  It will be a great meet.”

All-Around
Schmidt won the all-around with a combined score of 35.625 followed by Murawski of RPHF who had a 35.025.

Harmoning says she hopes her team receives a lot of fan support at the meet in Sartell.  The Sabres, Big Lake Hornets and the Bulldogs will be a few of the teams competing and all are ranked in the top 10 Class A schools.

“The final rankings just came out and Becker is ranked 10th, so we're a little bit of an underdog,” said the head coach.  “We believe ourselves capable, though, despite the multitude of unusual injuries and illnesses that we've had to deal with the season.  We're going to give it our best shot with the hopes of winning the meet and an entrance to the state tournament the next weekend.
