Four Wrestlers Take Home First Place Prizes In Albany

The Becker Bulldog wrestling team took second place at the Albany Purple Pride tournament last Friday night.

Cody Ferris (145-lbs.), Zack Zimmer (160-lbs.), Bobby Lee (170-lbs.) and Mason Olson (220-lbs.) took first place in their weight classes, Caleb Vekved took second at 138-lbs. and Josh Lumley (106-lbs.), Chris Weberg (195-lbs.) and Casey Vesledahl (275-lbs.) took third place in their matches. Mora won the meet with a score of 171.5 compared to Becker’s 167.5 and St. Cloud Apollo’s 129 (third place). Kimball (120.5) finished fourth, Osakis (115) fifth, Albany (112) sixth, Belgrade Brooten Elorsa (BBE) (86) seventh and Bird Island Olivia Lake Lillian Danuabe (BOLD) (84.5) eighth.
 
At 106-lbs., Lumley beat Seth Johnson of Osakis 7-1, then beat Lucas Womack of Albany 5-1 before losing to eventual champion Alex Pachan of SCA 10-6. Lumley proceeded to take down Peyton Schiefelbein of Kimball 2-1 to take home third.
 
At 113-lbs., Becker’s Andrew Berglund lost to Josey Tensen of BBE in the first round, then beat Michael Donnay of Kimball 11-3 before losing to Ryan Sok of SCA 5-1 to finish sixth.
 
Kevin Andres, at 120-lbs., lost his first round match to Aiden Schiltz of SCA 5-2 before beating Joel Sawatzky of Mora 8-4 and Jacob Hudock of Albany to take home fifth place.
 
At 126-lbs., Blake Paulson lost to Drew Van Vleet of Mora in the first bout, then won his next two matches by forfeit to garner fifth place.
 
At 132-lbs., Noah Arrigoni was pinned in his first match by Benny Garcia of BOLD, then lost by fall to Isaiah Gilbert of BBE in his second match to fall from the tournament.
 
At 138-lbs., Vekved pinned Christian Pierce of SCA at 1:03 in his first match, then had a major decision over Blake Poole of Mora (13-5) before losing to Nick Mergen of Albany in the championship match by default.
 
At 145-lbs., Ferris received a bye in the first round, knocked off Mitchell Kotschevar of Albany 3-0 in his second bout, then shut out Brandon Lucking of Mora 5-0 to take home the championship in his weight class.
 
Jaylin Hildebrandt, wrestling at 152-lbs., lost his first round match 12-0 to Alex Schramel of BBE, then beat Brandon Karlous of SCA with a fall, then beat Jake Rauenhorst of BOLD 6-2 to finish in fifth place.
 
Zimmer began his day with a bye at 160-lbs., then won on a technical fall (18-3) over Jordan Kittelson of Albany and squeaked by Reed Brown-Gmahl of Mora in the championship match by a 4-3 score to take home first place.
 
At 170-lbs., Lee got through the first round with a bye, then beat Brayan Guevara of Albany with a pin at 1:08, then beat Tyler Tober of Mora by a score of 9-3 to take home the championship.
 
At 182-lbs., Becker’s Tyler Madsen lost to eventual champion Nick Graham of SCA by a score of 5-3 in the first bout, then received a bye in the second round before beating Joe Reller of BBE 3-0 to finish in fifth place.
 
Chris Weberg, wrestling at 195-lbs., beat Devon Kelly of Kimball 4-1 in his first round match, but was pinned by eventual champion Jordan Tober of Mora at the 6:53 mark to fall into the consolation round. Weberg proceeded to knock off Martin Hanson of SCA by a score of 3-0 to take home the third place trophy.
 
At 220-lbs., Olson beat Kevin Cao of SCA, Mitch Sunder of Osakis and Austin Schiefelbein of Kimball to take home the first place prize in his weight division.
 
At heavyweight (275-lbs.), Vesledahl pinned Zach Foesch of BOLD at 1:21, then lost to eventual champion Bryce Kirchner of SCA in the second round before beating Ben Feuerhake of BBE by a score of 5-3 to take home third place.
 
Lee is currently ranked fourth in the state in the 170-lb. weight class and Zimmer ranked fifth at 152-lbs.
 
The boys move on to compete at team sections today (Saturday) in Monticello. They will be facing New London-Spicer in their first round match that begins at 1 p.m.
