Bulldogs Rebound, Beat Apollo By 4

The becker Bulldog football team topped off their regular season with a road victory over St. Cloud Apollo Wednesday night on the road. The Bulldogs needed a fourth quarter comeback to overcome the Eagles and it was QB Josh Fobbe who provided the heroics. His TD with minutes left in the game gave Becker the 21-17 win.

Fobbe, who missed the majority of last week’s game against Willmar because of a hip injury, came out strong and rejuvenated to lead the Bulldogs to their fourth win of the year. They now wait to see who their opponent will be for a likely home tilt Tuesday.

Fobbe completed 14 of 21 passes for 205 yards and had one passing touchdown. He also rushed for a one-yard touchdown with 3:30 to go in what proved to be the game-winner.

The Eagles struggled in the first half and by halftime found themselves losing by a 7-3 score. However, they kicked things up a bit in the third and scored twice to jump out to a 17-7 lead when Shannon Spears scored on a 28-yard pass from QB Neal Benson and RB Nicholas Gill dove over from two-yards out near the end of the third.

Along with Fobbe, the Bulldogs got great production from WR Lucas Dertinger and “business-as-usual” running back, Sydney Boros.

Dertinger had one of his best games of his year, catching seven passes for 137 yards and one TD. The first touchdown was on a one-yard plunge in the first quarter and the second was  from 25-yards out in the fourth quarter, with Dertinger making a diving catch in the end zone to cut the deficit to 17-14.

Boros was given the ball 24 times and he trudged through the Eagle defense for 165 yards — including a long run of 33 yards earlier in the game. He is the district's leading rusher.

The Bulldogs finished with 446 total offense with 241 coming from the ground game. Apollo finished with 254 total yards and had three turnovers.

Becker’s winning drive started at the Becker 16. Eleven plays later, Fobbe scored the game winner. Key play in the drive was a 44-yard Fobbe-to-Dertinger connection.

“Every game has been hard-fought right to the end and this was no exception,” said Head Coach Dwight Lundeen. “Our kids really battled. It was good football. Their coaches did a good job. Their game plan was good. Their quarterback threw the ball well.”

“We really wanted to give our seniors another home game at Eppard Field,” said Becker senior defensive lineman Nick Radunz. Radunz had two huge fumble recoveries in the fourth quarter along with a quarterback sack.

The victory broke a two-game losing streak and ensured that Becker (3-3 North Central White, 4-4 overall) will get a home game Tuesday in the Section 6AAAA playoffs. The opponent is Princeton (0-8), who Becker defeated in early September by a score of 56-0.

The winner will take on #2-seeded Delano who is 7-1.
