Bulldogs knock off #1 Tigers, 21-12

The Becker Bulldog football team capitalized on a great first half in their Homecoming game against Hutchinson Friday and held on to gain their fourth win of the year over the previously #1-ranked Tigers.

Becker came in ranked at #2 and both teams held 3-0 records before Friday’s contest. The Tigers were fresh off a bye the previous week and the Bulldogs were coming off a nail-biter against Chisago Lakes (21-14) the previous Friday.

Becker struck first in the game on a 36-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter from Ryan Bengtson to Nick Berglund. A pair of turnovers, including an interception and a fumble, hurt the Tigers and gave it back to Becker, which answered with two more touchdowns to take a 21-0 lead into halftime. The second touchdown came when Carter Callahan scored from two yards out and the third came when Bengtson found Berglund again — this time from 21 yards out to increase the lead to 21-0.

Hutchinson scored once in the third quarter on a short run by quarterback Colin Nagel, and again in the fourth quarter on a 26-yard scamper by Levi Teetzel. After both scores, however, the Tigers missed the two-point conversions, leaving them nine points behind Becker. Becker’s Zach Bengtson was perfect on his extra point attempts, going three-for-three after Becker’s three scores.

The Bulldog defense was incredible as they forced four turnovers including two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Callahan had one of the interceptions and Landen Goebel had the other as well as one of the fumble recoveries. Caden Hartkopf had the other fumble recovery Joseph Goth led the team with six tackles including an assist. Harrison Kent had five tackles and four assists including one for a loss. Dylan Weber had four tackles and two assists and Ethan Anderson had four tackles and three assists.

Ryan Bengtson finished eight-of-10 for 103 yards and two TDs. Kabir Bhakta gained 39 yards on seven carries and Callahan had 31 yards on nine carries for one TD. Berglund led the receiving corps with two catches for 57 yards and two TDs. Goebel had two ctaches for 24 yards and Alex Weiss gained 19 yards on three catches.
